The main contents of this volume are those of a late seventeenth-century scholar (excerpts from Cicero, Coriolanus, with sections on the Roman wars with Carthage, the ancient kings of Prussia and Bithnia, Theodoric the Ostrogoth, Attila the Hun, Nero’s crushing of a revolt in Roman Britain, as well as the animal fables Cicada et Formica, Vulpes et Felis, Vespersilio et Mustella, Vulpes et Hircus, Felis et Simia, and Canis cum Lepore). There is also topical material on the Duc de Chaulnes and the public display of the corpse of St. Francis Borgia (1510-72, canonised 1670). Some material on St. Genevieve, including an account of the procession of her relics in 1694, points towards Paris, and verses on King Louis XIV’s attacks on heresy, perhaps point towards the royal court. The final part, which contains a lengthy Geographia ascribed to the Jesuit Joseph de Jouvancy (1643-1719), adds that the geographic text was written in 1694 in Paris in the royal college or lycée of Louis XIV. This book may have come from the royal library, alternatively it may once been part of the library of the royal lycée. The school was founded by the Jesuits in 1563 as the Collège de Clermont, but renamed in Louis XIV’s honour after he extended it his direct patronage in 1682.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0456/6872/8995/products/s-l1600_84b4efc4-9094-46de-9b46-96bfdafed4fe.jpg?v=1606712758
almanacks-for-the-year-1688-contemporary-red-morocco-binding
ALMANACKS FOR THE YEAR 1688, Contemporary Red Morocco Binding

ALMANACKS - 1688

Collection of 13 almanacks for the year 1688 bound in one volume, including: COLEY, Henry: Merlinus Anglicanus Junior, [R407], J. The work was well received, and this monument of British history was continually updated and re-issued until 1631.

This 1631 edition is the second issue after Stow’s death: edited, continued and considerably expanded by Edmond Howes. Following the Annales, which cover the history of Britain from legendary times until the year 1631, there is an Appendix, with separate title pages, that deals with the foundations and descriptions of the three most famous universities of England: viz: Cambridge, Oxford and London. The Appendix includes an interesting list of all the ‘Arts and Sciences Read and Taught’ in the University of London, including: Law of Conscience, Calligraphie, Art Gladiatorie, Hippice – or the Art of Riding, Polemice or Art Military, Pyrotechnie, Art of Swimming, Orchectrice – or Art of Dancing, and the Art of Revels. Aside from the handsome title pages, and decorative headpieces and tailpieces, this book features a number of large decorated initials; with the exception of a few sections and passaged which are printed in italic or roman type, the book is printed throughout in black letter (gothic) type.

The work is considered as well to be European Americana, for it contains references to the voyages of Frobisher’s (1576, 1577 and 1578), Francis Drake (1580), and Thomas Cavendish (1586). It also includes a description of the English settlements in North America (1615), including Roanoke. This edition is of particular interest to Shakespeare scholars as it recounts the burning of the famous Globe Theatre in 1613, noted for its performances by Shakespeare and his associates. Additionally, it provides important Shakespearean literary references and background information - Shakespeare scholars have determined that Stow’s Annales clearly furnished ideas and imagery for Henry IV, Part II and may have been a source for a number of key passages in Henry V (see Whitaker, 144-5; Bullough IV:155ff). “Hal’s pranks have been splendidly elaborated on hints mainly supplied by Stow” (Bullough IV:177). A complete copy of this important book including many maps, by the Renowned Samuelis Bocharti [Samuel Bochart]. A composition on the geography of Canaan and nations mentioned in Genesis. Primary text in Latin. Includes 13 maps printed on special paper, among them large folded maps. Maps of various countries are written partially in Hebrew, which is very rare for the time. The book had a profound influence on biblical interpretation. Bocharti traces the biblical roots using Greek, Hebrew, Arabic and other Semitic languages, and used Hebrew letters to write words in Arabic. Includes a comparison table between letters in Latin, Hebrew, Greek and Sumerian. An edition of Bochart's Geographia sacra was owned by Isaac Newton (now in Trinity College, Cambridge, NQ.8.27). Bochart's history of nations and languages Geographia Sacra seu Phaleg et Canaan (first printed in 1646) was widely known and exerted a profound influence on Biblical exegesis. It was a notable attempt to construct a single historical narrative from the available Semitic and classical sources. Samuel Bochart (1599 - 1667) was a French Protestant biblical scholar, a student of Thomas Erpenius and the teacher of Pierre Daniel Huet. Bochart was one of the several generations of antiquaries who expanded upon the foundation laid down by Renaissance humanists, complementing their revolutionary hermeneutics by setting classical texts more firmly within the cultural contexts of Greek and Roman societies. Thus Bochart stands at the beginning of the history of ideas as a discipline that provides the modern context for all textual studies." In the early modern period many scholars and cartographers gave serious attention to sacred geography.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0456/6872/8995/products/Z_43701a07-7a7b-4344-a4b3-479ac5a6a26c.jpg?v=1607011273
charles-ii-portrait-indenture-fragment-circa-1600s
CHARLES II PORTRAIT INDENTURE FRAGMENT CIRCA 1600'S

CHARLES II PORTRAIT FRAGMENT FROM AN INDENTURE CIRCA 1600'S

An original cut-out probably from an elaborate indenture, depicting King Charles II, circa 1600s, paper over vellum, 265 x 220mm, reverse with some old manuscript text. He accompanied the Comte d'Avaux to Germany on a diplomatic mission in 1645, where he absorbed the superlative German advances in Veterinary science and Equitation. Upon his return to France, Solleysell established his own riding Academy, assisted Bernardi (his pupil), in founding another as well as embarking into the King's Service. He entered the Dominican order and lectured on philosophy at Paris, being also ordinary preacher to Henry IV, and afterwards ambassador at Rome. In 1606 he was vicar-general of the congregation of France, and received from Marie de' Medici the revenues of the sees of Lombez and Saintes. He also administered the diocese of Metz, and was nominated to the diocese of Marseille in 1621, but ill health obliged him here to take a coadjutor. Coeffeteau won considerable distinction in the controversy against the Protestant reformers and also wrote a History of Rome from Augustus to Constantine. Many of his theological writings were collected in one volume (Paris, 1622), and at the time of his death he was engaged on a translation of the New Testament which is still in manuscript. He was buried in the now demolished church of the Couvent des Jacobins in Paris. He was acclaimed for his command of the French language. Claude Favre de Vaugelas cited him as one of the two masters of the language at the time -"Nicolas Coeffeteau, dominicain, évêque de Marseille, un des fondateurs de la prose française, 1574-1623". The present work, written towards the end of his life, is extremely rare. With extensive indices and several laudatory poems, as well as a letter by Conrad von Rittershausen, the first to provide the Phaedrus fables with scholarly commentary. This is an important work in the "French perspective wars" from 1630-80. Desargues was the greatest perspectivist and projective geometer of his generation. Desargues was a civil and military engineer, an architect specialising in staircase design and above all a geometer of extraordinary spatial vision. His intellectual ambition was expressed in two closely-related aspirations: the building of a geometry of position (i.e. non-metrical) based on projective techniques; and the provision of all-embracing methods of geometrical operation for practitioners in various fields. In 1643, Bosse brought out the first of the publications in which he expounded Desargue's views. These consisted of treatises devoted to -- manières universelles -- for the cutting of stones in architectures according to the principles of projective geometry and the making of sundials, etc. These attracted new assaults, this time from an expert in stonecutting, Curabelle, who devoted three pamphlets to the criticism of Desargues's works. Scarce.

Notes: First edition of an early work on hermaphroditism and monstrous births drawing uncritically on a wide range of medical and non-medical sources, also including discussions of satyrs, incubi and succubi, lycanthropes, etc. Caspar Bauhin (1560-1624) was an acclaimed Swiss botanist and anatomist, born of parents who had fled to Switzerland from France after converting to Protestantism. His extensive work on botany was later developed by Linnaeus. The current book, ‘On the Nature of Unnatural Born Hermaphrodites’, claims to be the first extensive publication on a subject now receiving renewed interest in connection with the question of ‘gender fluidity’. Bauhin draws on Greek and Roman writers as well as the animal kingdom for his thesis and one of the rare copper plate engravings laid in at the back of the book is of “Hermaphrodites Transporting the Injured”, one of the extraordinary illustrations from ‘Brevis Narratio...’ (published by de Bry in 1591) in which the life and behaviour of the early Indians of Florida, America, is described). A further fold-out chart delineates the paternal and maternal factors thought to lead to unnatural births - including animal and demonic ‘conjoining contrary to the laws of nature'. Of the 6 other engraved plates number 4 is left blank, which is usual. Plate 2 shows ‘Hermaphrodite twins, conjoined at the back, born in Heidelberg in 1486’. Pliny the Elder's renowned Natural History in its first publication in English, translated by Philemon Holland, the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age. The "Naturalis Historia" is one of the largest single works to have survived from the Roman empire to the modern day and purports to cover the entire field of ancient knowledge, based on the best authorities available to Pliny. He claims to be the only Roman ever to have undertaken such a work. It comprised 37 books in 10 volumes and covered over 20.000 facts on topics including the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geology and mineralogy as well as the exploitation of those resources. It remains a standard work for the Roman period and the advances in technology and understanding of natural phenomena at the time. Some technical advances he discusses are the only sources for those inventions, such as hushing in mining technology or the use of water mills for crushing or grinding corn. Much of what he wrote about has been confirmed by archaeology. "We know from Pliny that there were important pearl fisheries in the Gulf [.] Pliny identifies Tylos (Bahrain) as a place famous for its pearls [. He] attests that pearls were the most highly rated valuable in Roman society, and that those from the Gulf were specially praised [.] The pearl related finds at the site of El-Dur indicate the site was integrated into the maritime trade routes linking the Roman Empire, the Persian Empire, India and South Arabia" (Carter). Book 6 holds a chapter that gives the first detailed account of the regions around the Gulf, including what are now Qatar, the Emirates and Oman. There were six or seven further editions of the book following Guillim's death, with the last one being printed in 1724. Guillim was born in Gloucestershire and entered the College of Arms in London after finishing studies at Oxford. At the College he became a junior officer of arms, a Rouge Croix pursuivant, in 1618. Guillim was devoted to heraldic studies and to writing the Display which proved to be the best organized and most encyclopedic work of English heraldry of its time. In it, Guillim deals with the social history and beginnings of heraldry, the different images appearing on arms, the various kinds of escutcheons and the families to whom they belonged, all divided into six parts and then into subchapters which were each closely analyzed. The alphabetical table comprises the names of those families whose arms are contains in the Display so one could look people up with ease. Although a small addition to the volume it makes the work much more usable. In his dedication to the King, Guillim rightly claims the merit of his originality, writing, "I am the first who brought a method unto this heroic art." ESTC S120342.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0456/6872/8995/products/SAM_0546_d44a4daf-c424-4414-a8f8-8b5085f066c4.jpg?v=1674065641
the-flaming-hart-or-the-life-of-the-glorious-saint-teresa-1662-leather-binding
THE FLAMING HART OR THE LIFE OF THE GLORIOUS SAINT TERESA 1662 LEATHER BINDING
[TERESA, SAINT, OF AVILA (1515-1582)]. The Flaming Hart or the Life of the Glorious S. The largest herbal in English, this was also the last great medicinally-based plant study. John Parkinson (1567-1650), a London pharmacist, received the title of Royal Apothecary from James I. Later, Charles I appointed him as his chief botanist ("Botanicus Regius Primarius"). Parkinson had a private garden in Long Acre 'well stored with rarities' (Theatrum, p. 609). Work on his herbal was helped by notes and unpublished material by the French botanist Matthias de l'Obel who had lived in north London in the last years of his life. Parkinson had given notice of his intention to compile a herbal in his Paradisus terrestris of 1629, but was delayed by the publication of the second Johnson edition of Gerarde's Herball, in 1636. This delay meant that Parkinson's work had time to grow much larger than originally planned, and on publication it included about a thousand more plants than Gerarde could, and describes many species not previously recorded. Natural history collecting in exotic lands was actively pursued from the earliest period of botanical study, and the earliest exploring ships were fitted out with special compartments for the transportation of animals and plants. Parkinson noted in his Paradisi in sole of 1629 that he had obtained a specimen of the "Scilla alba" in the manner of the day - which meant gathering with other collectors at the quay to meet the returning ships, and to purchase rare specimens directly from the sailors. Early botanical works were frequently illustrated with original woodcuts, and this book is a marvellous example of the impressive beauty that the relatively naïve method of woodcut illustration conveys in a botanical work, with a flower portrayed in line in singular contrast to the accompanying botanical description: altogether two thousand seven hundred woodblocks were individually cut for this massive herbal, which describes more than four thousand plants, most of them with medicinal properties. An admirer of Copernicus and a long-time correspondent of Brahe and Kepler, he proposed his own geocentric theory in 1589. His ephemerides, tables providing the position of celestial bodies in the sky at regular time intervals in the future, were first published in 1580, then periodically updated with new volumes. These works gained him international fame as an astrologer; during his life and well after his death, English and German almanacs were published under his name, and he was known as "The Italian prophecier". This work was originally published in 1604 under the title "Tabulae primi mobilis quas directionum vulgo dicunt". In 1607 he published in Venice the De astrologica ratione, ac usu dierum criticirum, seu decreeriorum; ac praeterea de cognoscendis et medendis morbis ex corporum coelestium cognitione (rest. Frankfurt 1608), a synthesis of "medical astrology". The present volume - a more demanding work - followed in Bologna in 1609. It was a development of the 'Tabulae Primi Mobilis' (Venice 1604), dedicated to Rudolph II, who had expounded the elements of plane and spherical trigonometry and given tables of the relative functions (but only for astrological use and with less accuracy). The tabular section has special title-page, with title: Io. Antonii Magini ...
