Fair. Extremely scarce.

Note: Based on John Rickman's 'Journal of Captain Cook's last voyage' (1781), but edited and extensively revised by David Henry and intended to form the sixth volume of his 'An historical account of all the voyages round the world, performed by English navigators', 1773-75. Sometimes also attributed to John Ledyard or to William Ellis. Rickman, second lieutenant of the Resolution, but for the greater part of the voyage on the Discovery, was the first to publish an account of Cook's Third Voyage. The work was, however, wrongly attributed to Ledyard until 1930 when Judge Howay demonstrated that Ledyard had simply copied whole sections of Rickman's book. The publisher, Newbery, recognised the potential of Rickman's anonymous journal, correctly assuming that it would be as successful as Marra's account of the Second Voyage, which he had also published; in fact this is considered the best edition in which the 1781 text is entirely re-edited and expanded. The folding plate is of some importance being the first representation in print of Hawaii. The early folding map of the North West Continent of America is considerably altered to show many more details. There also five additional plates, which are copied from those in the official account of the third voyage. The plates, now totalling ten, include: A man and woman of Von Diemens; A man of Mangea and a woman of Eaoo; Omais public entry on his first landing at Otaheite; Representation of the Heiva at Otaheite; A man and woman of Sandwich Islands; A man of Sandwich Islands in a mask; A man and woman of Nootka Sound; A man and woman of Prince William's Sound; A man and woman of Onalashka; [folding] Representation of the murder of Capt Cooke at O-Why-ee. The third edition appeared in 1701, with the separate 'A description of bandages and dressings' in the same year. The fourth edition of the main text only appeared in 1707, with the addition of Duncan's 'An excellent method .'. 'The second part of The compleat surgeon, containing an exact and compleat treatise of osteology' appeared in 1711. In 1714 the full text was reprinted in two volumes or parts, and this edition, the sixth in 1727. All editions are poorly represented in libraries. The 1707 and 1727 editions are the only ones to be issued in 8vo, the others being 12mos. B. Homann. Johann Baptiste Homann established in the early years of the 18th century the most successful map publishing firm in Germany. His prolific business, which his family continued after his death, dominated Germany's map market for over a century and produced some of the finest maps and atlases of the age. He started the firm in Nuremberg, and, in 1715, he was appointed Geographer to the Emperor. After his death in 1724, his son, Johann Christoph, assumed control of the firm and this is his issue of his father's map of Asia. This is a lovely example includes the northern tip of Australia (Nova Hollandia) Carpentaria, Nova Britannia and the Marianas. Hokkaido is identified as Terra Yedso and the fictional Compagnie Land, to the northeast of Japan. Dampier's passage shown stretching between New Guinea and New Britain and marks his discovery of New Britain in 1700. The map is a wonderful example of Homann's ornate, Baroque style. The title cartouche shows an Asian potentate pointing his scepter at three subjects, who bow on their hands and knees before him. The other cartouche in the upper right corner with a note to the viewer shows a procession of soldiers carrying a Hindu idol followed by men playing gongs, drums and wind instruments. Robert Dossie (1717-1777) was an apothecary, but his interests were very wide ranging and spanned the gulf between the Sciences and the Arts. His training and his knowledge of chemistry allowed him to understand the science behind many of the processes used by artists, artisans and manufacturers of the day, and his wish was to explain and improve on the results that were achieved. He strove for this in his publications, including the present work, and the same motivation led him to help fund the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in 1754. His works were appreciated during his lifetime, were translated into various languages and contain information that remains valuable today.

Volume I is in three parts, Part I deals with the substances generally used in painting, colours, instruments, colour preparation, bonding substances, oil and water, varnishing, glass and map washes, as well as cleaning of paintings, Part II contains several arts used in making outline sketches from nature, taking impressions from medals, busts, Part III, discusses gilding, silvering, bronzing, japanning, lacquering, and the staining different kinds of substances with a variety of colour. Alexander Macbean was a Scottish writer and one of the compilers of Dr Samuel Johnson's dictionary (the current book's preface was written by Samuel Johnson). He was a descendant of Clan Macbean, a highland Scottish clan dating back to the 15th century. Dr. Johnson himself wrote about the dictionary: "A work like this has long been wanted: I would willingly flatter myself that the want is now supplied." MacBean was mentored by Samuel Johnson in his career as a lexicographer. Despite the praise Johnson heaped on his work he insisted that MacBean possessed absolutely no life skills. This was borne out in the fact that Macbean struggled with finances his entire life and died penniless, retaining Johnson's respect for his work and his pious nature. After Mrs Maciver's death (c.1790), the school was continued by Mrs Frazer alone. She writes with authority on the food of upper class Edinburgh during one of the city's most interesting periods. The detailed recipes represent regional Scottish cooking for the upper-middle classes (with all its international influences). Recipes for very early modern trifle, orange marmalade, Scots Haggis and Rum Shrub (an early Rum cocktail mix) are a sample of what a well- heeled Scottish lady was expected to know how to prepare in the late 18th century. The haggis recipe is of particular interest, and is one of the earliest to appear, and Mrs MacIver's 'Haggie' is often referred to as the archetype of all modern Scottish haggis.

"THE GREATEST JEWISH PHILOSOPHER OF THE 18TH CENTURY… THE 'JEWISH SOCRATES'": OFFERED HERE IS AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF MOSES MENDELSSOHN'S MASTERPIECE, PHAEDON, 1789, ENTIRELY ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE

[MENDELSSOHN, Moses (1729-1786)]. Phaedon; Or, The Death of Socrates. London: Printed for the author, by J. ESTC records two issues [N54707 & T106920], with the final page of the prelims (‘The Life and Character of Socrates’) either numbered ‘lx’, or unnumbered, as here. ‘Three German editions appeared in two years; and it was soon translated into other languages, among them into English in 1789 by Charles Cullen, Barrister at the Middle Temple. In Phædon Mendelssohn aimed at adapting the ideas of Socrates to the eighteenth century. And in this an English reviewer in the Critical considers he has been successful. Cullen prefixed to this translation an account of the life and death of Socrates. His translation is faithful, but his translation is not always good. No other works of Mendelssohn’s were translated before 1830’ (Stockley, p. 36). "A legend even during his own lifetime, Mendelssohn was regarded as the embodiment of the humanist ideal" (Encyclopedia Judaica). "Mendelssohn was a creative and eclectic thinker whose writings on metaphysics and aesthetics, political theory and theology, together with his Jewish heritage, placed him at the focal point of the German Enlightenment for over three decades… he also contributed significantly to the life of the Jewish community and letters in Germany, campaigning for Jews' civil rights and translating the Pentateuch and the Psalms into German. Not surprisingly, as a Jew with an unwavering belief in the harmonizing effects of rational analysis and discourse, Mendelssohn rankled both institutional and self-appointed advocates of Christianity as well as Judaism" (Stanford Encyclopedia).

As "the greatest Jewish philosopher of the 18th century… 'the Jewish Socrates'… Mendelssohn exerted a great influence not only upon his closest friends but upon his whole generation in Germany and upon Kant in particular." Author of other key works such as Jerusalem (1783), on the separation of church and state, and civic equality for Jews, he also achieved renown for his public dispute with Swiss clergyman Lavater, who "challenged him to prove the superiority of Judaism over Christianity" or agree to convert (Encyclopedia of Philosophy V:276-77). It was a challenge "Mendelssohn effectively disabled with a plea for tolerance and a series of reasons for refraining from such religious controversy" (Stanford Encyclopedia). In 1767 Mendelssohn used Plato's famous dialogue the Phaedo as a model to publish Phädon oder über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele (Phaedo, or on the Immortality of the Soul). With this seminal work, "he reached the heights of fame" (Wigoder, Dictionary of Jewish Biography, 342). First published in English in this rare 1789 edition, the work unites Mendelssohn's "paean to Socrates with an elaboration of the dreadful personal, moral, and political implications if a person's life is her 'highest good'… This 'classic of rational psychology,' as Dilthey put it, also contains an argument for the simplicity and immortality of the human soul, explicitly singled out for criticism by Kant in the 2nd edition of the Critique of Pure Reason. Mendelssohn supports the notion that the soul is simple and thus indestructible by noting that certain features of the soul, namely, the unifying character of consciousness and the identity of self-consciousness, cannot be derived from anything composite, whether those composite parts be capable or not of thinking… As for the human soul's fate after death, Mendelssohn appeals to divine goodness and providence, which perhaps explains why, following the publication of the Phaedo, he finds himself needing to revisit the proofs for God's existence" (Stanford Encyclopedia).

A leading philosopher of the German Enlightenment (Haskalah), Mendelssohn "continues to challenge scholars of Jewish thought and history. In his lifetime he was already recognized as the man who launched the Jewish thinking of the modern age, and also as the founding father of Jewish modernism… particular emphasis has been placed on his historical role as the harbinger of the change in the status of the Jews in Europe—the liberation from discrimination and restrictions, the achievement of equality in civil rights—the emancipation" (Intellectual History Review). The first edition of Price's Observations (printed mid-February, 1776) sold out within three days, and by May 14th was in its eleventh edition. A close friend of Benjamin Franklin and one of the most influential British advocates of American independence, Price believed every community had a right to govern itself. He discusses four types of liberty (physical, moral, religious, and civil), focusing primarily on civil liberty, the principles of government, and the issues surrounding the war of American independence. Price warned that the war would be financially disastrous for England and argued for new measures to be adopted in the treatment of the American colonies, or else "ruin" would be "our lot." He foresaw the possibility that America could establish "a plan of government, and a growing power that shall astonish the world, and under which every subject of human enquiry shall be open to free discussion, and the friends of Liberty, in every quarter of the globe, find a safe retreat from civil and spiritual tyranny" (p. 103). This work had a significant effect on the resolve of American colonists to secure self-government. In 1778 Price was offered the singular honor of United States citizenship. "In recognition of his services in the cause of liberty, Dr. Price was presented with the freedom of the city of London, and it is said that the encouragement derived from this book had no inconsiderable share in determining the American colonists to declare their independence" (DNB). James Burges . . . perceived that quantitative arguments were very persuasive, and he provided a brief history of the acceptance of inoculation to illustrate their role. Those who opposed inoculation, Burges wrote, did so 'with all the arguments their wit and prejudices could furnish.' Those who supported the practice, on the other hand, had 'recourse to calculation, by comparing the numbers of those that died in the natural ways, with that of the persons that miscarried under the inoculation, by demonstrating how small the chance was of escaping the distemper, and how little the hazard incurred from this new method of contracting it.' Burges concluded that Jurin's approach 'carried such conviction with it, as soon confounded their opposers, and establish the practice' " (Rusnock, Vital Accounts: Quantifying Health and Population in Eighteenth-Century England and France, pp. 67-68).

[CHURCH OF ENGLAND]. The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of England; Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in Churches. Oxford: printed by John Baskett, Printer to the King’s most Excellent Majesty, 1741.

Reprint. While this edition is commonly referred to as Urry's, he died before he could complete the work. His successor Thomas Ainsworth also died before the work was ready for the press, and it was revised by Timothy and William Thomas. "This was the first collected edition of Chaucer to be printed in roman type. The life of Chaucer prefixed to the volume was the work of the Reverend John Dart, corrected and revised by Timothy Thomas. The glossary appended was also mainly compiled by Thomas. The text of Urry's edition has often been criticized by subsequent editors for its frequent conjectural emendations, mainly to make it conform to his sense of Chaucer's meter. The justice of such criticisms should not obscure his achievement. His is the first edition of Chaucer for nearly 150 years to consult any manuscripts and is the first since that of William Thynne in 1534 to seek systematically to assemble a substantial number of manuscripts to establish his text… Urry was a friend of Thomas Hearne, who styles him a 'thorough pac'd scholar' and a 'truly worthy and virtuous, as well as ingenious, gentleman.' A portrait of Urry, engraved by N. Pigné, is prefixed to the work" (ODNB). This edition contains three previously unpublished tales: "The Coke's Tale of Gamelyn," "The Merchant's Second Tale" and "The Adventure of the Pardoner and Tapster at the Inn at Canterbury." This edition also includes a glossary of Middle English terms. After the publication of this edition Malone died leaving much unfinished material. James Boswell the younger gathered this and, after almost a decade of preparation, published in 1821 a 21-volume landmark edition which is known as the third variorum edition, and which became a staple of the Shakespeare reprint trade. Edmond Malone (1741-1812) is regarded as the greatest eighteenth-century Shakespearean editor and commentator. He used the ten-volume edition by Samuel Johnson and George Steevens as his base text but went far beyond Johnson and Steevens in establishing an authoritative text, consulting early folios and quartos more thoroughly than any previous scholar had done. Moreover, using archives from London, Stratford and country houses, he both expanded biographical knowledge of Shakespeare and corrected errors which had been perpetuated from Rowe’s “Life of Shakespeare” onwards. He arranged the plays in their supposed order of composition, and he included the poems as a standard part of an edition.
URRY'S SPLENDID 1721 ILLUSTRATED FOLIO EDITION OF CHAUCER, WITH THREE PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED TALES, IN CONTEMPORARY CALF BINDING

[CHAUCER, GEOFFREY]. The Works, Compared With the Former Editions, and Many Valuable Mss.
