He was a descendant of Clan Macbean, a highland Scottish clan dating back to the 15th century. Dr. Johnson himself wrote about the dictionary: \"A work like this has long been wanted: I would willingly flatter myself that the want is now supplied.\" MacBean was mentored by Samuel Johnson in his career as a lexicographer. Despite the praise Johnson heaped on his work he insisted that MacBean possessed absolutely no life skills. On The Connexion Of The Physical Sciences was originally published in 1834 by Scottish polymath, and science writer Mary Somerville (1780-1872). Alongside her contemporary Caroline Herschel, she was jointly nominated as Honorary Member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835. \"Perhaps no woman of science until Marie Curie was as widely recognized in her own time. Not only did [Somerville's works] bring scientific knowledge in a broad range of fields to a wide audience, but thanks to her exceptional talents for analysis, organization, and presentation, they provided definition and shape for an impressive spread of scientific work\" (ODNB). His extensive work on botany was later developed by Linnaeus. The current book, ‘On the Nature of Unnatural Born Hermaphrodites’, claims to be the first extensive publication on a subject now receiving renewed interest in connection with the question of ‘gender fluidity’. Bauhin draws on Greek and Roman writers as well as the animal kingdom for his thesis and one of the rare copper plate engravings laid in at the back of the book is of “Hermaphrodites Transporting the Injured”, one of the extraordinary illustrations from ‘Brevis Narratio...’ (published by de Bry in 1591) in which the life and behaviour of the early Indians of Florida, America, is described). A further fold-out chart delineates the paternal and maternal factors thought to lead to unnatural births - including animal and demonic ‘conjoining contrary to the laws of nature'.
