On The Connexion Of The Physical Sciences was originally published in 1834 by Scottish polymath, and science writer Mary Somerville (1780-1872). Alongside her contemporary Caroline Herschel, she was jointly nominated as Honorary Member of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1835. "Perhaps no woman of science until Marie Curie was as widely recognized in her own time. Not only did [Somerville's works] bring scientific knowledge in a broad range of fields to a wide audience, but thanks to her exceptional talents for analysis, organization, and presentation, they provided definition and shape for an impressive spread of scientific work" (ODNB). In 1835, she became one of the first two female members of the Royal Astronomical Society - On the Connexion of the Sciences preceded that accolade by a year. In it, Somerville urges an interdisciplinary approach to science, arguing that new discoveries can be made when research "unites detached branches by general principles." To truly advance human understandings of the world, a researcher must consider how astronomy, physics, meteorology and geology tackle overlapping problems to create a fully three-dimensional picture of the universe. "In all there exists such a bond and a union that proficiency cannot be attained in any one without a knowledge of the others." Incorporating the most up to date research of the time, in consultation with leading scientists such as Faraday, Lyell, and Ampere, it was "soon established as a scientific classic and bestseller, functioning for a time as an annual progress report for physical sciences" as updated editions were released in 1835, 1836, and 1837 (ODNB). While Somerville's work was addressed to the professional scientific community as opposed to focusing on the education of women or children in the sciences; and in this sense she broke through a glass ceiling to be taken seriously by mathematicians including Laplace. And the philosopher John Stuart Mill so highly valued her work that he requested hers to be the first signature on his Parliamentary petition advocating for women's suffrage. The Morning Post upon her death proclaimed her the undisputed "Queen of Science". Ogilvie 245. This work proved to be a popular handbook on globes which ran into many editions. Harris begins with an introduction to the latest models of globes, celestial and terrestrial. He then demonstrates how to use the globes to solve problems, including finding latitudes and longitudes for any given place, finding the position of the sun at any given date, discovering on which date the sun will be directly overhead in any given spot in the torrid zone, computing the length of any given day of the year, finding the altitude of a star, and so on (Taylor, The Mathematical Practitioners). Joseph Harris (1702-64) began as a blacksmith in Cornwall with an interest in mathematics. He designed and made mathematical and navigational instruments, and his interest in navigation led him to voyage to Mexico and Jamaica. He also taught mathematics, and in 1748 became Master of the Mint in the Tower of London. These interests are reflected in his publications on coinage and navigation. The two publishers of the book were also practical savants: Thomas Wright was a maker of scientific instruments, who specialised in the orrery, while Richard Cushee (who died in about 1732: the publisher here is probably his son) was a maker of globes and was the engraver of the plates in this book.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0456/6872/8995/products/SAM_7252_e2bc2557-275c-4b29-861a-f2a11c13c836.jpg?v=1650265016
an-introduction-to-astronomy-by-john-bonnycastle-1796-third-edition
AN INTRODUCTION TO ASTRONOMY BY JOHN BONNYCASTLE 1796 THIRD EDITION
[BONNYCASTLE, John, 1750?-1821]. An introduction to astronomy. Hamilton (1743-1829) was born in Edinburgh and his working life began as a clerk with a firm of bankers, during which period he, with other literary and political enthusiasts, formed the Speculative Society. In 1769 he became rector of Perth Academy and it was there that he published the first edition of this book in two volumes, 1777-79. It is the present corrected edition, however, that Bywater and Yamey, Historic Accounting Literature, chose to write a chapter on, where they fully describe its contents, innovations and importance. "A relatively small number of books indicated how accounting arrangements, by double entry or otherwise, could be adapted to the recording of farming operations, whether on a large scale or small, or to manufacturing operations. The Descent of Man was the first work to use the word 'evolution', preceding its use in the sixth edition of Origin of Species by a year, and it expands upon the theories of selection and evolution proposed in Origin of Species. In Descent, Darwin puts forth a new theory of sexual selection, explaining how it differs from and works alongside natural selection. This volume discusses how evolutionary processes apply to humankind, drawing in concepts from evolutionary psychology and ideas of differing characteristics of anthropologically defined races of people. This work had huge implications for the history of humankind and was met with mixed responses from a society in which conservative religious beliefs could be at odds with scientific advancement, but it went on to become immensely popular. In the 17th century (this work first appeared in 1682) as described and illustrated in this book, there were two methods of removing stones--by the use of an instrument inserted through the penis or by way of small incisions beneath the scrotum. The work is in three sections: the first section (cose antiche) describes and illustrates the antiquities, the second section (pietre, minerali e terre) lists over 100 minerals as well as petrified objects and fossils, and the third section (corali, conchiglie, animali, frutti ed altere cose) comprises corals, shells, preserved aquatic creatures, animals, vegetables and 'other things'. An admirer of Copernicus and a long-time correspondent of Brahe and Kepler, he proposed his own geocentric theory in 1589. His ephemerides, tables providing the position of celestial bodies in the sky at regular time intervals in the future, were first published in 1580, then periodically updated with new volumes. These works gained him international fame as an astrologer; during his life and well after his death, English and German almanacs were published under his name, and he was known as "The Italian prophecier". This work was originally published in 1604 under the title "Tabulae primi mobilis quas directionum vulgo dicunt". In 1607 he published in Venice the De astrologica ratione, ac usu dierum criticirum, seu decreeriorum; ac praeterea de cognoscendis et medendis morbis ex corporum coelestium cognitione (rest. Frankfurt 1608), a synthesis of "medical astrology". The present volume - a more demanding work - followed in Bologna in 1609. It was a development of the 'Tabulae Primi Mobilis' (Venice 1604), dedicated to Rudolph II, who had expounded the elements of plane and spherical trigonometry and given tables of the relative functions (but only for astrological use and with less accuracy). The tabular section has special title-page, with title: Io. Antonii Magini ... The mineralogical researches of Jan De Laet and the translation (presumably by de Laet) of Theophrastus' "On Stones" are added here for the first time.

"In his 'Gemmarum et Lapidum Historia' Boodt, the Bruges humanist and court physician to Rudolf II of Bohemia, made the first attempt at a systematic description of minerals, dividing the minerals into great and small, rare and common, hard and soft, combustible and incombustible, transparent and opaque. He uses a scale of hardness expressed in three degrees and notes the crystalline forms of some minerals (triangular, quadratic, and hexangular). Boodt criticizes some of the views of Aristotle, Pliny, Paracelsus, and others, but accepts the existence of the four elements and three principles, although he also mentions atoms. He enumerates 600 minerals that he knows from personal observation, and describes their properties, values, imitations and medical applications. There are also tables of values of diamonds according to their size and a short description of the polishing of precious stones. Boodt cites nineteen authors and, besides the minerals known to him, gives a list of 233 minerals whose names he knows from Pliny and Bartholomeus Anglicus, among others." (DSB)

"De Boodt assembled virtually all of the knowledge then extant...by far the most thorough and complete up to date... [The book] is further distinguished by its intimate knowledge of the art of the lapidary and must therefore be regarded as the first treatise to offer more than the briefest views of gem cutting." (Sinkakas)

"One of the most important mineralogical works of the seventeenth century, Boodt's work marks a transition over previous lapidaries. A new era was marked with its publication, one in which the believes of the past began to be challenged, and the researchers began to use hypothesis and experimentation to present new ideas… Boodt was skeptical of the curative virtues of various gems. He suspected that it was coincidental that a specific type of gemstone was associated with a sick person who became well. Instead, he believed if stones had curative powers it was because they worked in concert with the body to effect a cure, not any supernatural property.

"Discussing the properties of stones, Boodt gives a long discussion of hardness. He provides the earliest system of hardness grading for the various stones, which acted as a crude index to distinguish imitation gems from genuine. He distinguished three degrees of hardness and also included softness as a related but different property. Soft stones are considered such if fingers alone are sufficient to rub away the surface. Hard stones are called hard when they can neither be rubbed away with fingers nor cut by iron. Hard stones are classified under three categories: (1) a steel file can scratch the stone, (2) only the use of the Smyrna stone [emerald??] can cut the surface, and (3) those that can only be rubbed away with a diamond point." (Mineralogical Record)

Brunet: 1, no. 1108; Dryander, Catalogus Banks, 1796-1800: 4, p. 6; Freilich Sale Catalog: no. 69; Roller & Goodman, Catalogue, 1976: 1, 140; Sinkankas, Gemology Bibliography, 1993: no. 781; Poggendorff: 1, col. 1341.
