Abruzzi was one of the last of the aristocrat-explorers whose access to vast personal fortunes allowed them to mount expeditions \"untrammelled by the need for government approval or public subscription.\" (Howgego) At home he was a quiet and reserved man, but once abroad he became \" a man of daring and courage for whom no challenge was insurmountable.\" His expeditions were meticulously planned, and executed with almost military precision, often calling upon the same group of \"like-minded friends, an army of scientists and guides, and immense stores of provisions and equipment.\" The Duke's first expedition of 1897 had scaled the previously unconquered peak of Mount St. Elias on the border between Canada and Alaska. The present work is an account of his arctic assault of 1898-1900; \"An important attempt at the North Pole with descriptions of conditions, wildlife, nature, food, weather, equipment with the second section written by U. Cagni on the sledge march. Amedeo reached the closest to the North Pole at that time. Some of his men froze to death while pulling their sleds over the ice. A richly illustrated work, beautifully photographed and described.\" (Arctic Bibliography). Abruzzi later led expeditions to the Ruwenzori and the Himalayas; commanded the Italian Adriatic fleet during World War I; and founded an experimental agricultural community in Somaliland during the 20s. This is a bulky work involving Baines in a great deal of exacting preparatory work. He contributed the major part of the text and practically all the wonderful illustrations, some of which he cut on wood, having taught himself the art. William Lord and Thomas Baines intended Shifts and Expedients to be a wide-ranging manual of instruction on the art of surviving in, and enjoying, the great outdoors of the nineteenth century. Pooling their considerable experience of strange lands they produced an encyclopaedia of practical living for the aspirant explorer of a hundred years ago. Everything is explained: wagons and boats, horses and oxen, tents and firearms, hunting and fishing, observing and collecting, carpentry and metal-working, camping requisites, bush cuisine, medical improvisation, the best ways to cross rivers, to move heavy objects, to build huts. It is copiously illustrated with black and white plates by Eric Kennington, William Nicholson, William Roberts, Augustus John, Gilbert Spencer, William Rothenstein, Carline, Frank Dobson etc. Churchill wrote: \"It ranks with the greatest books ever written in the English language. If Lawrence had never done anything except write this book as a mere work of the imagination his fame would last. But it is fact, not fiction. An epic, a prodigy, a tale of torment, and in the heart of it - A Man\". The book records the experiences of T. E. Lawrence while serving with rebel forces during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Turks of 1916-1918. \"Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and, in October 1916, was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia Deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles\" (ODNB). This book deals mostly with his second journey, when he made surveys east and west of Tashilunpo, of the Yarlung Valley and Lake Yamdo Tse. Profusely illustrated, with numerous illustrations and many fold-out maps. Printed on glossy paper to better capture the impact of the images. Chadra Das was the most famous of the Indian 'pundits' who secretly spied on and mapped Tibet at the behest of the British Government. This present volume contains the recollections of his journey to Lhasa, undertaken some years prior to the British invasion, while Lhasa was still closed to foreigners. Rockhill, editor of this volume, had twice tried and failed to reach the holy city. Edwardes was appointed to the personal staff of Sir Hugh Gough, the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian army, whom he served during the first Anglo-Sikh War (1846-47). Thereafter the Punjab was ruled by a British Resident. With the stirrings of a second rebellion, Edwardes, despite any military training, raised a body of soldiers and defeated rebels loyal to a local Sikh leader. After numerous battles throughout the area, the local governor surrendered following negotiations with Edwardes. As a result of his deeds, he became quite famous and celebrated back in England. Edwardes (1819-1868) returned to the Punjab on a number of occasions, acting as a political appointee posed with the task of maintaining order in the area. The plates, based on drawings made by Stedman whilst in Surinam, were reproduced by various engravers, including William Blake who was responsible for sixteen. Stedman served in the Scots Brigade; a regiment of mercenary troops that had been established by the Netherlands to help protect its constitutional interests. In 1772, he volunteered to accompany the expedition sent by the States-General to subdue the insurgents in Dutch Guiana. However, the book takes a strong anti-slavery stance (as witnessed by the involvement of the progressive William Blake). \"In 1772 [Stedman] volunteered to accompany an expedition sent out by the States-General to subdue the revolted Negroes in Surinam, or Dutch Guiana... The field of his curiosity embraced not only all branches of natural history, but also economical and social conditions. His description of the cruelties practiced on the Negroes, and of the moral deterioration resulting to their masters, forms one of the most vivid indictments of slavery that have been penned\" (ODNB). It has been suggested that Stedman's work may have contributed towards William Blake's strong opposition to slavery.
