Shelvocke commanded the Speedwell, whilst John Clipperton commanded the Success. Together they were involved on raids against Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America. Shelvocke then parted from Clipperton to conduct his own raids in Peru and to sail up the coast to Cabo San Lucas, where he remained for several months, writing one of the earliest descriptions of the Indians of Baja California. He was also one of the first men to suggest the possibility of finding gold in California. The map depicts California as an island and two of the plates show natives of California. It has been suggested that Shevlocke's account of the passage around Cape Horn, where a sailor killed an albatross, inspired Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
