Scarce.

Notes: A wonderful second edition copy [Brunet I, 1086: "Edition préférée..."] of this sumptuously illustrated Baroque compendium of musical instruments - an early attempt to describe and illustrate every known musical instrument including those from America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, but also with classical and European examples. The information was gleaned from various authors and ethnographical reports. The contents being organised based on the use for which the music is intended (e.g., for battle, worship, festivals, funerals, hunting, navigation, etc.). The suite of attractive illustrations are by Flemish-born painter and publisher Arnold van Westerhout (1651-1725), and depict the instruments being held by their players in their native costumes and environs. Some of the depictions of the ancient and foreign musicians are rather fanciful, however, the majority of the engravings provide genuine and invaluable information on music and musical instruments up to the early 18th century.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0456/6872/8995/files/SAM_4991_6e4c4431-0f9b-4b3b-af9e-cbf9b86c77af.jpg?v=1791039883
https://rarebooksboutique.com/products/gabinetto-armonico-pieno-distromenti-sonori-indicati-spiegati-by-filippo-bonanni-1723
