The first edition of 1543 was preceded only by two other anonymous mathematical texts in 1537 and 1539. \"The third part\" was added to the works in 1582. This rare seventeenth century edition of the work was edited and augmented after the author’s death by John Dee, John Mellis, and Robert Hartwell. It was the standard arithmetic textbook of the period, passing through numerous editions until the late 1600s. Dee’s contributions were of a practical nature, being sections on foreign exchange and on foreign weights and measures.
