Note: The Thornton edition is by far the finest twentieth century collected edition of the works of the Bronte sisters, well printed with broad margins and fine plates. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne were prolific English writers of the mid nineteenth century, who like many contemporary female writers, originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their poetical and prose work immediately attracted attention for their passion and originality, and subsequently became accepted into the canon of great English literature. This set contains the following works: 'The Professor', by Charlotte Bronte; 'The Life of Charlotte Bronte', by E. C. Gaskell with an introduction and notes by Temple Scott and B. W. Willett; 'Agnes Grey', by Anne Bronte, with a memoir of her sisters by Charlotte Bronte; 'Wuthering Heights', by Emily Bronte with a preface by Charlotte Bronte; 'Shirley', in two volumes, by Charlotte Bronte; 'Villette', and three plates to volume II; six plates to volume I 'Jane Eyre', and five plates to volume II; one plate to volume I of 'The Tenant of Wildfell Hall', and one plate to volume II.
