Folio, 2º, (290 x 200 x 25mm). [6], 152 p. Engraved allegorical title-page, 7 double page engravings, 6 single page plates, 2 in text gravings: maps. Signatures: pi1 [Maltese cross]² A-T⁴. English text. Printer’s name from colophon. Running title reads: The Seige of Breda. Head- and tail-pieces, shoulder notes, decorative initials. initial and terminal blanks present. Beautifully bound in contemporary calf, spine gilt. Provenance: Henk Visser's bookplate to front pastedown. Condition: Upper board detached. Slight wear and abrasions to covers. Light browning, however, the contents generally remain very well preserved. R⁴ with small corner piece torn away. Illustrations very good. Scarce.

Note: Hugo (1588-1629) was a Jesuit and military chaplain, Gage (1597-1645) served with distinction during the siege. The plates are copied from the Latin edition printed at Antwerp, 1626. "This is the best of the histories of the siege of Breda under Spinola... The maps and diagrams will greatly contribute to the understanding of the system of fortification of the period" (Cockle).
