[CHALMERS, John (1821-1884)]. Letters Written from India During the Mutiny and Waziri Campaigns. Edinburgh: T. and A. Constable, 1904.
First edition. Cloth-bound. Hardcover. Octavo (215 x 140 x 35 mm). Pp. xxxii, 167. English text. Bound in publisher's original burgundy cloth with gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Initial and terminal blanks plus half-title present. Portrait frontispiece, and a folding plate of a hand-drawn plan of the battles of Nooriya and Sirpoorea. Appendix to rear. Includes a biographical sketch by Isabel Grace Chalmers. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight, secure and square. Very slight bumping to the spine ends, the spine just a little sunned, some trivial soiling to front board. The interior near fine with many leaves unopened; showing some light toning to endpapers, with a gift inscription to front pastedown. A very good copy of an extremely rare title.
Notes: First edition of Chalmers' letters, sent home from the Mutiny, which "were found after 50 years and published unaltered" (Ladendorf). "Chalmers went out to India in 1849 in the employ of the E.I.C. He served as a civil engineer and raised a regiment in the Punjab during the Mutiny. Served at Dehli and commanded the ladder party with Nicholson's column. He returned to England in 1880 with the majority of his sight gone" (Sorsky). [Bruce 3972; Ladendorf 241; Riddick 200; Sorsky 254].
