These essays first appeared in The London Magazine between 1820 and 1825, published in book form in 1823 with a second volume in 1833. Charles Lamb's essays were very popular in the nineteenth century, charming the reader with their personal and conversational tone. Themes explored were such of nostalgia, compassion, and regret. Featuring 'Dream-Children' and 'Old China', two of the most popular essays in the collection. With an introduction and preface by Augustine Birrell and illustrations in text by Charles E. Brock, a widely known English artist.
