First edition, in two volumes, leather-bound, hardcover, quarto (26cm x 18.5cm), pp. xviii, 400; [6] 401-777. English text. Bound in handsome red half calf gilt by Bumpus, cloth sides, top edge gilt, other edges uneven, marbled endpapers, half-titles present, title-pages in red and black, each volume has a frontispiece with tissue-guard, with a total of 33 illustrations, plus 12 maps and plans, printed footnotes, index to rear in double columns. Printed by Bradbury, Agnew, & Co. Ltd. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure with the joints and hinges intact, the covers beautifully preserved. Just a touch of spotting to endpapers and fore edges, else very clean and without previous ownership markings. A stunning set and scarce thus.
Notes: First edition set of this comprehensive history of the famous English cavalry unit, ranging from its origins in the 17th century to the Boer War. Included are some of the Household Cavalry's most famous actions at Dettingen, the Peninsula, Waterloo, and Tel-el-Kebir. A third volume was published 17 years later by Heinemann.
