Notes: Probably the best-known work of a leading German classical archaeologist, an attempt to recreate the daily life of ancient Rome in the form of a work of fiction, with extensive scholarly annotations and appendices; Becker later produced a similar volume for Greece. This is a serious work aimed at a popular audience; some of Becker's more conventional scholarly work was completed by Mommsen.
