The second edition, with additions and improvements by Samuel Patrick, LL.D. and usher of the Charter-House School. Complete in two volumes. Leather-bound. Hardback. Thick quartos (260 x 210 mm). Unpaginated (approximately 1600 pages). Continuous signatures. English and Latin text in triple columns. Bound in handsome period reverse calf, the spines with red morocco lettering-pieces in the second compartments. Condition: GOOD. Bindings tight and secure, the hinges intact. Mild rubbing to spine ends and points. Leaf C4 of the preface is lacking the bottom half, the contents otherwise complete. Text-block lightly trimmed and toned. Some thumbing, spotting and ink marks throughout.

Notes: Scarce second edition of this work, with additions and improvements from schoolmaster and scholar Samuel Patrick, for some years the second master at Charterhouse School. This was a well known work in its day, authored by Robert Ainsworth, a Latin lexicographer who explains in his preface that the motivation for these volumes was to do 'a service to learning'. This educational work, subtitled a 'Compendious Dictionary of the Latin Tongue: Designed for the Use of the British Nations', also includes the Roman calendar, units of measurements and a chronology of Roman kings and consuls.
