Notes: Anthony Horneck (1641-1697) was a Church of England clergyman. He shared the orthodox protestant belief in witches, contributing an appendix of Swedish cases to Joseph Glanville's Saducismus Triumphatus (1682, second edition). In the 17th century, both the Lutheran and the Reformed orthodox parties displayed an unparalleled enthusiasm for Rabbinic and Hebrew studies; this was the strongest feature of Horneck's intellectual equipment and led to the award of a Cambridge DD in 1681. Much of Horneck's literary output was devoted to the rules of life for Christians. In 1693, he became chaplain to William III and the first of a series of court chaplains and German preachers in the Savoy who played a distinguished role in British religious life for most of the eighteenth century.
