Spines gilt in compartments with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces. Marbled boards. Red speckled page edges. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. Printed by Spottiswoodes and Shaw. Condition: VERY GOOD. Bindings tight and secure with the hinges and joints intact. Covers and contents very well-preserved with light foxing to frontispieces. A handsome set.

Notes: An early edition in English of Lamartine’s history of the Girondists and their role in the French Revolution, with steelengraved frontispiece portraits. Alphonse de Lamartine served as diplomat and minister of foreign affairs during the Revolution of 1848. “He was a man of action as well as a creative writer—a statesman and a great orator” (Harvey & Heseltine, 390). While credited with quelling the insurrection of May 15th, 1848, he soon after fell out of favor and returned to literary work. History of the Girondists is considered his greatest prose work, which he followed with histories of the Restoration and Revolution. Lowndes, 1299.
