The Howards of Norfolk and Naworth Castle Cumberland Scrapbook
Leather-bound, hardcover, thick quarto (30cm x 25cm x 10cm), unpaginated, c.250 leaves, hundreds of engravings (mostly 18th & 19th century), numerous textual pages, hand-rubricated borders, bound in quarter leather with gilt titling, cloth sides, uneven page edges. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure, the covers well-preserved. Some light scattered foxing, and some toning at edges and corners, but most of the pages are clean.
Notes: A large well-produced scrapbook of the historical Howard family, circa late 19th century or early 20th century, with pages clipped neatly from other books and pasted onto the blank leaves. Most of the contents are illustrations, but some text pages from various books are included; a few pages of text running sequentially from a particular book, are followed by a few pages from another book, with a different narrative, and then a few pages from a third book are chosen, and so on. The illustrations include portraits of Royalty and other prominent figures, as well as other properties including Arundel Castle, Morpeth Parish Church etc. A huge amount of effort has gone into the production of this large and heavy book, not just in terms of the selections, but also the presentation.
