ELEVENTH EDITION. In three volumes, leather-bound, hardcover, octavo (20cm x 13cm), pp. xii, 339; vii, 288; vi, (2), 364. English text. Bound in handsome contemporary full tan calf, the spines in compartments fully gilt ruled, tooled and lettered, contrasting lettering-plates of green and brown in second and third compartments, gilt fillet to the boards, each upper board with two central gilt tools, marbled page edges and endpapers, decorative title-pages in red and black, 20 engraved illustrations, printed footnotes, decorative initials, vol.1 with rear appendix. Printed by Bradbury and Evans. Provenance: nice armorial bookplate to front pastedowns of Buchan-Hepburn of Smeaton Hepburn. Condition: VERY GOOD. Bindings tight and secure with the hinges and joints intact. Some light mottling to covers and trivial rubbing to extremities. The interiors very well-preserved with just a hint of light scattered foxing. A beautiful set.
Notes: Uniform eleventh edition of Ingoldsby's Legends, a famous collection of legends and ghost stories and humorous tales that was most popular in the nineteenth century. The set includes two portraits of Ingoldsby and engravings by Leech and also Cruikshank, known for both his caricatures and his illustrations for numerous Dickens' stories.
