Bound in publisher's original red cloth, with gilt lettering and decoration on spine and front board, with blind-stamped decoration at edges of both boards; all page edges gilt; initial and terminal blanks plus half-title present. With 13 illustrations by leach, Doyle, Maclise & Stanfield. Printed by Bradbury and Evans. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure with very slight lean to spine. Cloth covers largely clean with light fading to spine. Interior largely clean with just a few light fox spots affecting initial leaves. Small previous owner signature to fep. Small booksellers ticket to corner of front pastedown.

Notes: 'The Chimes' is Dickens' second 'Christmas Book', published after his popular 'A Christmas Carol'. Like his other Christmas books, 'The Chimes' has strong social and moral messages, typical of many Victorian fiction works - here dealing with the sad disillusionment of a poor working-class man, Toby 'Trotty'.
