[ALIGHIERI, Dante]. The Vision of Dante Alghieri, or Hell Purgatory and Paradise. Translated by the Rev. H.F. Cary. London and New York: J.M. Dent, 1909.
Leather-bound. Hardcover. Octavo (19 cm x 12 cm x 3 cm). Pp. xxi, (2), 451. English text. Contemporary vellum with a hand-painted roundel portrait of Dante based on Sandro Botticelli's painting, surrounded by hand-painted floral design in art nouveau style, with ties. Extra-illustrated with 10 mounted plates relating to Dante and Italian art. Condition: VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure. Covers well-preserved. Interior with some toning, occasional browning, and new endpapers. Scarce thus.
Notes: Period hand-painted vellum bindings are rare and highly collectable. The binding decorations are probably the work of the Giannini family workshop in Florence. It is likely executed by Giulio Giannini (1853-1931), though similar work was carried out by his son Guido (1877-1956) and grandson Giulio Junior (1901-1992).
