First edition; leather-bound; hardcover; small octavo (16cm x 9.5cm x 3cm); pp. [ix], 402; English text; handsomely bound in contemporary half calf; spine gilt with five raised bands; morocco title-plate in second compartment; marbled paper-covered boards; red speckled page edges; teal endpapers; with 7 illustrated plates by George Cruikshank, including a frontispiece. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure the hinges and joints perfectly intact; some light rubbing to the boards; interior with some light browning and spotting; contents leaf with a small ink mark. A handsome copy and scarce thus.
Notes: FIRST EDITION of one of Scott's final works, in the form of letters to his friend, later son-in-law and biographer J. G. Lockhart about witchcraft and trials, demonology, fairies and elves, astrology, ghosts, and magicians. Howard P. Lovecraft described the work once as one of the best compendiums on European witchcraft. This copy with the rare illustrated plates by George Cruikshank, those being: The Ghost of Mrs Leckie (as frontis); The Spectre Skeleton; Elfin Tricks; Elfin Arrow Manufactory; Puck in Mischief; Witches Frolic; and, The Bow, Edinburgh - House of Major Weir.
