Title pages to vol. 1 (1854) and vol. 2 (1855) bound in at end of nos. 12 and 23-24 respectively. The parts bound in 2 custom morocco cases. Cover title: "Mr. Thackeray's new monthly work. The Newcomes; Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family. Edited by Arthur Pendennis, Esqre.; Illustrated by Richard Doyle. London: Bradbury and Evans, 11, Bouverie Street." Arthur Pendennis being a pseudonym for William Makepeace Thackeray. 375 pages, each part paged consecutively. Illustrated with 46 etchings on steel and numerous textual engravings on wood after Doyle. "Contents", and "List of plates" (6 unnumbered pages) bound at end of numbers 12 and 23 & 24. Each number contains 2 engraved plates, except number 12 which has one plate and the engraved title page for volume 1; and number 23 & 24, which has 3 plates and the engraved title page for volume 2. Issued in illustrated yellow paper covers with advertisements on the inside front and back covers and the outside back cover. Includes a section of advertisements at the beginning of each number called The Newcomes Advertiser, ranging from 4 to 16 pages. Advertisements included at the back of most issues printed on coloured paper. Presented in custom crushed morocco cases with gilt spines, produced by a premiere firm but unmarked. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. The bindings are all very good and firmly held together, although one or two parts show slight wear at spine ends. Slight dustiness to some covers. Contents are clean with some illustrations showing toning. The cases are excellent. Scarce thus.
