[DOYLE, A. CONAN]. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, Limited, 1892.

First edition, first state of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic work starring literature's most famous detective with the misprint "Miss Violent Hunter" on page 317. Cloth-bound. Hardcover. Quarto (240 x 160 x 30 mm.), pp. [4], 317. Publisher's original pictorial black and gilt-stamped light blue cloth, bevelled board edges, patterned endpapers, all edges gilt. With numerous in-text illustrations by Sidney Paget. Printed by The Gresham Press. Condition: Binding tight, secure and square - the hinges strong. Very slight bumping to spine ends, with the points nicely sharp. Couple of minor splash marks to front cover, else very clean. Contents largely well preserved; however, there is some old glue residue to front and rear endpapers, two contemporary signatures and a tear to the rear endpaper. Good to very good. Scarce.

Notes: First edition, first state of Arthur Conan Doyle's classic work starring literature's most famous detective with the misprint "Miss Violent Hunter" on page 317, and the blank street sign in the vignette to the front cover. The textual error continued through three further printings, but from the second impression onwards the street sign was corrected to read "Southampton Street". Green & Gibson A10. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes contains the earliest short stories featuring the consulting detective Sherlock Holmes, which first appeared in twelve monthly issues of The Strand Magazine from July 1891 to June 1892. Collected in the same sequence, which is not supported by any fictional chronology, the only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson and all are related in first-person narrative from Watson's point of view. Stories include A Scandal in Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, A Case of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Five Orange Pips, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Adventure of the E
