Notes: From the blurb: "This work attempts a full bibliography of editions of the General History of Quadrupeds, the History of British Birds, and the Fables of Aesop published by Thomas Bewick in his lifetime (1753-1828), together with collected editions of proofs of cuts issued in book form in that period. Up to the present there has been none such: standard works such as Hugo's Bewick Collector (1866-8) and Bell's Catalogue (1851) are neither complete nor accurate, while the Catalogue of the Pease Collection at Newcastle (1904) deals only with that collection. Full bibliographic specifications are given covering, as far as possible, every issue of every edition, and notes on each edition deal with its production and publication and any special relevant problems. There is a general introduction to the whole subject. All title-pages are reproduced, for the most part in full size, as well as prospectuses for first editions, 'thumb-mark' receipts, and certain of the woodcuts. Appendixes deal with, among other things, Advertisements, the Collected Edition of 1822, the New York (1804) pirated edition of the Quadrupeds, and the successive states of the figures of quadrupeds and birds."
