Bound in handsome contemporary half calf, spines gilt, marbled paper-covered boards, marbled page edges and endpapers. Half-titles present. Profusely illustrated throughout; volume I illustrated with an engraved title page, one double-paged map, one map, and thirty-seven plates - volume II illustrated with an engraved title page, one map, and thirty-eight plates. Printed footnotes. Index in double columns to rear of volume II. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Bindings tight, secure and square, the hinges and joints intact. Light rubbing to extremities, the cover generally very well-preserved. Interiors largely fresh and clean. Some previous owner details neatly to endpapers. An excellent set.

Notes: A handsome first edition set. Taylor was a Scottish minister and historical author, known for his many works on his homeland. He is alluded to in Benjamin Disraeli's 'Lothair'.
