Notes: The Gypsy Lore Society was originally founded in Edinburgh in 1888 with the aim of promoting study of the historical origins, language and customs of Roma. The Society moved headquarters to Liverpool in 1907, and to the United States in 1989. Through its journal, the ‘Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society’, its archival and library collections, and the personal networks that it fostered, the Society both showcased and influenced trends in Romani Studies over the twentieth century. The first series of Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society was published in 3 volumes from 1888 to 1892. The second series was published in 9 volumes from 1907 to 1916. The third series was published in 52 volumes from 1922 to 1973. The fourth series was published in 2 volumes from 1974 to 1982. The fifth and last series was published in 9 volumes from 1991 to 1999. In 2000 this title was succeeded by Romani Studies. This offering of the first series is considered extremely scarce. [E. Rosenhaft; R. Alexander; UoL].
