First edition. Leather-bound; hardcover; octavo (21cm x 13cm x 3.5cm); pp. [4], 412. English text. Bound in contemporary full calf gilt; red speckled page edges; initial and terminal blanks present; with two folding engraved plates. Condition: VERY GOOD. A handsome tight and clean copy. Some light rubbing to extremities, the interior with light spotting to endpapers, else excellent.

Notes: Saunderson lost his sight from smallpox as a baby but became a distinguished mathematician and friend of Newton and Whiston, whom he succeeded as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in 1710. His highly respected work entitled Elements of Algebra, considered 'a model of careful exposition', was published posthumously in 1740. It contains an account of Euclid's doctrine of proportions, a consideration of Diophantine problems, magic squares and the solution of biquadratic equations. The editor of the present volume is unknown.
