FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Leather-bound; hardcover; octavo (21 x 13 x 3.5 cm.); pp. viii, 442, [1] advertisement. English text (translated from the French). Bound in stunning contemporary marbled calf gilt; speckled page edges; marbled endpapers; half-title; folding engraved map frontispiece and folding engraved plate of the labyrinth of Knossus. Provenance: John Dalton's armorial bookplate to front pastedown, with his gift inscription to his granddaughter neatly inked to the front endpaper (most likely the 18th/19th century scientist, who pioneered the development of atomic theory and carried out research into meteorology and colour blindness). Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure. Covers very well-preserved with some trivial wear to extremities. Interior with some light toning throughout and offsetting at the second plate. 

Notes: First edition in English, published in French in the same year. This volume contains 42 letters recounting Savary's experience in Greece, with particular attention given to the islands of Rhodes and Crete. It includes an engraving of the famous Minotaur's labyrinth at Knossos. A wonderful copy. [Cox I 236; Blackmer 977 (French edition)].
