[HUGO, Victor (1802-1885)]. Châtiments. Genève; et New-York: [éditeur non identifié], Saint-Helier, Dorset street, 19: Imprimerie Universelle [1853].

First complete edition. Leather-bound. Hardcover. Miniature format. In-32 (110 x 70 mm.), pp. (4), iii, (1), 392 pp. French text. Finely bound in contemporary full brown shagreen; spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering in the second and fifth compartments; gilt inner dentelles; all page edges gilt; marbled endpapers; half-titles; table of contents to rear. Provenance: Interestingly inscribed by Prince Pyotr Petrovich Troubetzkoy (1822-1892) to his friend Charles Morris. Condition: VERY GOOD. Collated complete. Binding tight and secure, the hinges intact, some minor rubbing to points. Contents largely fresh and clean, inscription neatly inked to fep. Scarce.

Notes: First edition recognized by the author, actually printed in Brussels by Henri Samuel. A collection of satires against Napoleon III - it contains the parts that were missing in the truncated edition of Brussels, as well as a 3 page introduction by Victor Hugo at the beginning of the book. Carteret, I, 415; Vicar, IV, 312.
