[ANDERSEN, Hans Christian]. Danish Fairy Legends and Tales. London: Addey & Co., 1853.

SECOND EDITION IN ENGLISH; cloth-bound, hardcover, octavo (18cn x 11cm x 4cm), pp. xl, 535, [8] advertisements. English text, translated by Caroline Peachey, with a memoir of the author. Bound in publisher's original cloth, gilt titles and decoration to spine, yellow endpapers, half-title, frontispiece, title-page vignette, 20 illustrations plus a portrait of the author, publisher's advertisements to rear. Printed by Stevens and Co., London. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Contents complete. Binding tight and secure. Light sunning to spine, the ends slightly rubbed. Boards well-preserved. The interior with some very light and trivial scattered fox spots. Previous owner details to front endpaper. An excellent copy of this scarce title.

Notes: The first complete English translation of Andersen's Fairy-tales. It contains 45 Fairy-tales of which 31 are first translations. The advertisement-leaf states that the former edition, published in 1846, was, with the exception of a few stories rendered by Mrs. Howitt. That edition, however, contained only fourteen tales, while the present numbers forty-five, being in fact the first complete collection printed in the UK. The translation from the original Danish is by Caroline Peachey. Rare in good condition and in the original cloth.
