[BECKER, Prof. W.A.]. Gallus, or Roman Scenes in the Time of Augustus. With Notes and Excursuses Illustrative of the Manners and Customs of the Romans. Translated by Rev. Frederick Metcalfe. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1873.

Fourth edition. Leather-bound. Hardcover. Octavo (195 x 120 x 40 mm.). Pp. xxi, 535. Bound in contemporary full tan calf, spine gilt, gilt crest to boards, marbled page edges, marbled endpapers, half-title present, illustrations in the text, index to rear in double columns. Printed by John Childs and Son. Condition: GOOD to VERY GOOD. Binding tight and secure the hinges intact. Slight rubbing to extremities. Interior fresh and clean, else for some light foxing to endpapers. Prize plate to front pastedown.

Notes: Probably the best-known work of a leading German classical archaeologist, an attempt to recreate the daily life of ancient Rome in the form of a work of fiction, with extensive scholarly annotations and appendices; Becker later produced a similar volume for Greece. This is a serious work aimed at a popular audience; some of Becker's more conventional scholarly work was completed by Mommsen.
