Uniformly bound in handsome contemporary half calf gilt; marbled paper-covered boards; marbled page edges and endpapers. Volume I with engraved portrait frontispiece, vignette half-title, and 14 engraved plates. Volume II with engraved portrait frontispiece, vignette half-title, 11 engraved plates, and 1 folding plan. Volume III with engraved portrait frontispiece, vignette half-title, and 8 engraved plates. Extensive printed footnotes. Condition: VERY GOOD. Bindings tight and secure. Covers very well-preserved with the slightest hint of rubbing to the boards. Interiors largely clean, else for some light toning or foxing to some plates. A most handsome set.
Notes: Title-pages undated but the engraved frontispiece in volume II is dated 1839. This is the second complete edition - the first edition appeared in 1809 in two folio volumes, followed by a much-abridged single octavo edition in 1810. This second complete edition, was originally issued in 7 parts in 1839/1840, with a view to being bound in 3 volumes [as here]. This edition includes the recollections of Tom Allen, plus the memoirs of Thomas Masterman Hardy, and Lord Collingwood.
